Fruth Pharmacy held its Eighteenth Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament August 6, 2009 at the Greenhills Country Club in Ravenswood, WV. There were 160 golfers in this year’s event which included representatives from sixty of Fruth Pharmacy’s business partners and suppliers. Fruth Pharmacy associates also participated in this year’s event which raised over $25,000. The proceeds from this tournament are used to fund the Fruth Scholarship Program. The Fruth Scholarship Program was set up to help Fruth employees and their family members pursue a college education. Scholarships funded from this event support students at Marshall University, West Virginia University, University of Rio Grande and The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy. Justin Bowe, Ashley Hackett, Chesley Helmick and Krysta Jenkins were the 2009 recipients for the Marshall University Scholarships. Brianna Darrow and Natalie Heckathorn were awarded the scholarships for West Virginia University. Jessi Ison was awarded the athletic scholarship for women at Marshall University funded by Frances “Babs” Fruth.

The first Fruth Golf Tournament was held in 1992 at the Esquire Country Club in Barboursville, WV. There were approximately 50 golfers who participated and $2000 was raised with the proceeds going to a school Reading Program recommended by Babs Fruth. “My parents always placed a high value on education and giving back to the community” stated Lynne Fruth, Chairman of the Board. In 1995, the tournament raised over $15,000, and the Marshall University Scholarship program was established. West Virginia University, University of Rio Grande and University of Charleston School of Pharmacy Scholarships were later added. At the 9th Annual Scholarship golf tournament in 2001, three new scholarships were announced by Fruth’s Founder, the late Jack E. Fruth. The new scholarships established included one for a local student at the Mid Ohio Valley Center of Marshall University in Point Pleasant, an athletic scholarship for women at Marshall University funded by Mr. & Mrs. Jack E. Fruth, and a scholarship for a student at the Meigs County Center of the University of Rio Grande funded by Fruth Pharmacy. Mrs. Fruth stated; “We are honored to endow the first scholarship for a full time Mason County student to continue their education after high school by attending the Mid Ohio Valley Marshall University Center. This is a beautiful facility and a wonderful asset to our community.”

There was sadness at the 14th Annual Scholarship Tournament in 2005 held at the Cliffside County Club in Gallipolis, Ohio after the loss of Jack E. Fruth. This event, however, marked a milestone by raising over $20,000 for the foundation that had been established by the Fruth Pharmacy founder. The tournament has continued to grow in size and in the number of scholarships awarded. The tournament is a fitting tribute to Jack E. Fruth and his desire to help both his employees and his community. Plans are already underway for next year’s event. Fruth Pharmacy would like to thank all the participants, sponsors, and volunteers who helped make this event a great success.
