Ironton, Ohio (April 9, 2013) – Lynne Fruth and other members of the Fruth Pharmacy staff joined the Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization (ILCAO) during their quarterly staff meeting at Ohio University Southern on April 9th. The purpose of this visit was to introduce Fruth Pharmacy and the 340B program to staff and providers of the ILCAO.
D.R. Gossett, ILCAO Executive Director, opened the meeting by speaking about the successes of the ILCAO. “We have accomplished a lot in the last few years. We had a time in history where it seemed like we had a convergence of things that have helped us grow.”

Tom Willoughby, Fruth Pharmacy CFO, was on hand to help discuss finances and budget information during ILCAO’s quarterly meeting.

Gossett went on to explain about upcoming hardships that the ILCAO may face in the current economic downturn, “What do we care about? We care about our patients and their quality of care. What do we need to do? Working as a team we are going to take care of the person on the phone, the person walking into the office. We have a lot of committed challenges. National politics will be focusing on us. Grant funds to the underinsured or non-insured patients are not going to grow. We are going to have to become more and more self-sustaining.”
Gossett then introduced Lynne Fruth, President and Chairman of Fruth Pharmacy to the group of healthcare workers, “Really excited to have Lynne Fruth here to talk about the 340B program. A huge component of our practice is to get medications to the people that need them the most. One of the beautiful things you’ll find about Fruth Pharmacy is it is a family business, but they are not exactly a small business. They have a skill and proficiency, confidence and compassion, to help us with our goals.”

Lynne Fruth, President and Chairman of the Board for Fruth Pharmacy, presented a PowerPoint on Fruth Pharmacy’s values, company culture, and community projects. Fruth went on to give a basic definition of the 340B program for the entire audience.

“We are not new to the 340B program. We have been working with this program for about 7 years now. We currently work with a total of 25/26 individual programs. We got involved early on in the 340B program – it was difficult to understand and use – and not a lot of people wanted to do it. We, however, continue to see the benefits of this program for patients.”
“Let me give you a brief ‘Layman’s view’ of the 340B program. 340B is a federally funded program that was designed to provide help with medical care. The program is targeted to reach those persons that fall through the cracks, the underinsured or non-insured patient that doesn’t qualify for Medicare or Medicaid. This program is designed for working people – people working hard, in entry level positions trying their best to provide for themselves and their families. Because we are a 340B pharmacy, if these persons qualify for the 340B program and they bring their prescription to Fruth Pharmacy – they will get that prescription at a significantly discounted price.”
“We have had customers tell us that this program has saved them $200 a month – this is a significant savings to a struggling family – and often times helps the patient stay on their medication, due to its affordability.”
