Point Pleasant, W.Va. – (October 10, 2017) – On Thursday, August 3rd, Jeff McCloud and Kathy Wilson received a phone call from a frantic mother. The mother, Natalie Lycans, had already called 911 for her daughter. Lycans’ daughter has PVCD – Paradoxical Vocal Cord Dysfunction. Persons with PVCD have trouble breathing when their vocal cords become constricted. Different things can trigger PVCD: Upper respiratory infections, exercise, anxiety, fumes/odors, cigarette smoke, acid reflux, allergies, and more. Lycans’ daughter felt her cords closing and called her mother for assistance.

Lycans feared she could not get to her daughter fast enough. After calling 911, she called their pharmacist, who she knew was in the same plaza as the shopping center where her daughter worked. Pharmacist Jeff McCloud and technician Kathy Wilson ran out to the parking lot to assist. They stayed with Lycans’ daughter, comforting her and offering help until the ambulance arrived.

“They went above and beyond the call of duty to help my daughter,” Lycans spoke of McCloud and Wilson, “my daughter was in serious trouble and ended up having to be intubated at the hospital, in order to breathe. Jeff and Kathy were the first ones to help my daughter – and without them, I don’t know if she would still be with us. In my eyes they are the heroes that this world needs more of…,”Lycans completed.

Lycans, grateful for the assistance of McCloud and Wilson, contacted Fruth Pharmacy’s corporate office through their website. The message she sent was forwarded to Lynne Fruth. Fruth submitted McCloud and Wilson’s names to the Human Resources department for the 2017 Fruth Red Vest Award. The Red Vest Award began in 2016 at Fruth Pharmacy to honor employees that made a life-saving difference in a customer or patient’s life.

McCloud and Wilson will be given this honor at the Fruth Galaxy Awards banquet held on October 26, 2017.
