Lynne Fruth graduated magna cum laude from West Virginia University in 1980 with a degree in education. She had plans for a career in public education and coaching. During the 1980s she found her niche in education – working with the most difficult and challenging children. After completing her Master’s degree in Education in 1995 at Marshall, she began working as a consultant in addition to continuing her work teaching children with developmental and behavioral disorders. In May 2009, she was elected Chairman of the Board of the family business, Fruth Pharmacy, and began full-time employment at Fruth that summer. The company maintains a work force of nearly 700 employees in 25 locations  in West Virginia and Ohio. Under Lynne’s tenure, the company quickly reorganized to go from having a significant deficit, to a profitable year end in under three years, all in the midst of the worst economic conditions since the 1930’s. Lynne was responsible for adding new management team members with years of experience in large corporations like Kmart, Walgreens and McKesson to Fruth’s corporate team and leveraging their experience to transform operations in a remarkably short period of time.  These team members joined a large group of long tenured Fruth employees to create a perfect mix of experience and loyalty.  Lynne Fruth continues to operate Fruth Pharmacy as a business with a solid bottom line and a big heart for the communities it is privileged to serve, keeping alive her father’s mission to create a true ‘hometown pharmacy.’

In her acceptance speech, Lynne Fruth was quick in giving credit to her father and mother (Jack and Frances Fruth) and the entire Fruth family for their support, as well as praising the hard work of Fruth Pharmacy’s 650 employees; both the ‘legacy’ employees who have worked for the company for many years, as well as the new members of the Fruth Pharmacy family who joined since 2009 and quickly worked together to invest in the business’s future success.

The event was held at the Marshall University Alumni Center; about 250 people were present, including 17 members of the Fruth family and Fruth Pharmacy family, for an elegant evening recognizing the accomplishments of some of the outstanding  businesspeople in the region.  Fruth Pharmacy partners with Marshall University to provide a number of scholarships, including the newly created Marshall School of Pharmacy Scholarship, and Fruth will provide practice sites for Marshall University pharmacy students.
